Liuzhou Friendship Garden

CLIENT: Cincinnati Park Board & Cincinnati USA Sister City Association

LOCATION: Liuzhou, Guangxi Province, China

SCOPE: Master Plan

STATUS: Completed 2007

AWARDS: Cincinnati Design Awards 2007

Human Nature collaborated with a multi-disciplinary and international team comprised of Kolar Design and the Cincinnati Park Board to design and implement the Cincinnati-Liuzhou Friendship Garden. As one of Cincinnati’s Sister Cities, Liuzhou asked the Cincinnati Park Board and the Design Team to generate a concept for a garden, located in Longtan Park, that would embody the close friendship between the two cities. The resulting plan captures the spirit of the two cities. Liuzhou, the Dragon City, is represented by a plaza consisting of plantings, special paving, and sculptural stones that suggest a dragon holding a pearl. Cincinnati, the Queen City, is represented by a plaza surrounded by plantings and a jewelled crown trellis. Connecting the two sides of the garden is an arched pedestrian bridge that echoes the form of the Roebling suspension bridge in Cincinnati. The bridge of friendship spans the “ocean” that separates the two cities.
